Why You Should Put a Piece of Chalk in Your Closet

A simple piece of chalk is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to protect your wardrobe from dampness and musty odors. Tying a bundle of chalk together and hanging it in your closet absorbs excess moisture from the air, preventing mold and keeping your clothes smelling fresh.
If you live in a humid climate, or if your closet doesn't get much airflow, you have probably noticed that unmistakable "old house" smell clinging to your jackets or sweaters. Moisture trapped in dark, enclosed spaces is the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. While chemical dehumidifiers or silica gel packets work, they can be expensive to replace. A box of standard blackboard chalk costs almost nothing and does the exact same job naturally.
How Does Chalk Absorb Moisture?
Chalk is incredibly porous. Because it is essentially made of compressed calcium carbonate, its microscopic structure acts like a rigid sponge. When you place a piece of chalk in a damp environment, it naturally draws moisture out of the ambient air and traps it inside.
By pulling that humidity out of the air, the chalk creates a drier microclimate inside your closet. This removes the damp conditions that mold spores need to thrive, effectively stopping the musty odor before it can sink into the fabric of your clothes.
How Do You Set Up the Chalk Hack?
You don't need any special tools to make this work. A standard box of white blackboard chalk from any office supply store is all you need.
- Make a Chalk Bundle: Take about 10 to 12 sticks of chalk and tie them tightly together with a rubber band, a piece of string, or ribbon.
- Hang It Up: You can tie a loop with the string and hang the bundle directly from your closet rod, or place it in a breathable mesh laundry bag and hang it from a hook.
- Target the Shoes: For extra protection, place a single stick of chalk inside your most worn pairs of shoes. The chalk will absorb sweat and dampness overnight, neutralizing foot odors.
How Often Should You Replace the Chalk?
The chalk will eventually become saturated with moisture and lose its effectiveness.
Generally, you should replace the chalk bundle every few months. However, you don't actually have to throw it away. Once the chalk feels slightly damp or stops working, you can place it out in the direct hot sun for a few hours. The heat will bake the moisture out of the porous structure, allowing you to reuse the exact same pieces of chalk over and over again. It is a completely zero-waste solution that keeps your favorite clothes dry and smelling clean.
