The Ultimate Hack for Fixing a Lost Hoodie Drawstring

We have all been there. You pull your favorite hoodie out of the dryer, and to your absolute horror, one end of the drawstring has disappeared entirely inside the hood. It is one of life's most mildly infuriating experiences.
You usually spend the next twenty minutes desperately scrunching the fabric, trying to pinch the tiny end of the string and inch it through the tunnel, only to accidentally pull it out the other side. It is tedious, annoying, and completely unnecessary.
I recently stumbled upon a brilliant life hack that turns this incredibly frustrating chore into a 60-second fix. The best part? You only need one common household item that you probably already have sitting in your kitchen drawer: a simple plastic drinking straw.
The Drinking Straw Drawstring Hack
This method works because it gives the floppy, hard-to-grip drawstring a rigid structure that easily glides through the fabric tunnel of your hood. Here is exactly how to do it:
- Pull It Completely Out (Yes, Really): If your drawstring is only halfway lost, go ahead and pull it completely out of the hoodie. It is much easier to start fresh than to try and rescue a half-lost string.
- Thread the Straw: Take a regular plastic drinking straw and thread your drawstring through it. Push the string through until it comes out the other side.
- Secure the End: Once the string is threaded through the straw, you need to secure it so it doesn't slip back out. You can tie a loose, temporary knot in the string at the very end, or use a piece of tape to tape the string to the outside of the straw.
- Feed the Straw Through: Now, take the straw (with the string securely attached) and push it into one of the drawstring holes on your hoodie. Because the straw is rigid, you can easily push it through the fabric tunnel all the way around the hood in a matter of seconds.
- Remove the Straw: Once the straw pokes out of the other hole, grab it and pull it through. Untie your knot (or remove the tape), slide the straw off the string, and you are done!
No more scrunching, no more cursing at your laundry, and no more leaving your hoodies un-stringed. It is a game-changer!
A Few Extra Tips
If you do not have a plastic drinking straw, you can also use a safety pin. Simply attach a medium-sized safety pin to one end of the drawstring, close the pin, and use the hard metal body of the pin to guide the string through the fabric channel.
However, I find the straw method to be much faster and smoother, as the pin can sometimes snag on the inner fabric of the hoodie. Try both and see which one you prefer, but I promise you will never go back to the pinch-and-inch method again!
