Stop Trash Bags from Slipping Forever with Command Hooks

Throwing away garbage should be simple, right? Yet, one of the most consistently annoying things in the kitchen is tossing something into the trash can, only to watch the entire plastic bag slip down and collapse inward. Suddenly, your coffee grounds and apple cores are getting all over the inside of the bin, and you are forced to fish out the messy, slime-covered edges of the bag.
It is infuriating. You can try tying the bag tighter, but that makes it annoying to remove later. You can buy fancy, expensive trash cans with custom-fit bags, but why spend that kind of money when you can solve the problem for a couple of dollars?
I recently learned a brilliantly simple hack that completely eliminates this issue forever. All you need are two small, adhesive wall hooks (like Command hooks).
The Upside-Down Hook Method
This hack works perfectly because it creates built-in anchors on the sides of your trash can to hold the bag taut. It takes about two minutes to set up, and you never have to worry about a collapsing bag again.
Here is what you need to do:
- Gather Your Supplies: You will need two small adhesive hooks. Command hooks are ideal because they are easy to remove later if you change your mind, but any cheap adhesive hook will work.
- Clean the Bin: Wipe down the outside of your trash can, specifically on the two opposite sides, a few inches below the rim. Make sure the surface is completely clean and dry so the adhesive sticks properly.
- Attach the Hooks (The Secret Twist): Here is the crucial part of the hack: you are going to stick the hooks onto the outside of the trash can, but upside down. The "hook" part should be pointing toward the floor, not the ceiling. Stick one hook on the left side of the bin and the other on the right side, both about three to four inches below the top rim.
- Insert the Bag: Now, line your trash can with a bag just like you normally would.
- Secure the Loops: Once the bag is in, pull the built-in drawstrings (or the handles/knots of a regular grocery bag) down on the outside of the can and hook them underneath your upside-down Command hooks.
That is it! By looping the drawstrings under the upside-down hooks, you create tension that pulls the bag tightly against the rim of the can. No matter how heavy your trash gets, or how aggressively you toss something in, the bag cannot slip down because the hooks are locking it in place.
Why This is a Game-Changer
When it is time to take out the trash, you just unhook the strings, tie the bag, and lift it out. It adds zero extra time to your chores, but saves you from having to scrub the inside of a dirty, slime-coated trash can ever again.
Give it a try—it is easily one of the most satisfying home organization hacks I have ever used.
