The Simple Dry Towel Trick That Cuts Laundry Drying Time in Half

Laundry day is rarely anyone's favorite day of the week, but the most frustrating part is usually the waiting. You pull a massive, heavy load of wet clothes out of the washing machine, transfer them to the dryer, set the timer for 60 minutes, and cross your fingers.
An hour later, the buzzer goes off. You open the door, reach in, and grab a pair of jeans—only to find the pockets are still damp and cold. So, you set it for another 20 minutes and the waiting game continues.
If you are tired of your dryer taking forever and hiking up your energy bill, I have an incredibly simple, practically free trick that will speed up the process significantly. It doesn't require buying expensive dryer balls or upgrading your machine.
All you need is a single, clean, dry bath towel.
The Dry Towel Hack
The process is exactly as straightforward as it sounds. Here is how I do it:
- Load the Dryer: Transfer your freshly washed, wet clothes from the washing machine into the dryer just like you normally would.
- Add the Dry Towel: Grab a thick, highly absorbent, and completely dry bath towel from your linen closet. Throw it directly into the dryer drum on top of the wet clothes.
- Start the Cycle: Turn the dryer on to your usual heat setting.
- The 15-Minute Rule (Optional but Recommended): Let the dryer run for about 15 to 20 minutes. After that time, open the door, find the heavy bath towel you added, and take it out. Then, let the rest of the load finish drying.
The Brilliant Mechanics Behind It
Why does tossing a dry item into a wet environment speed up drying? It all comes down to basic moisture absorption and distribution.
When you first start your dryer, there is a massive amount of excess water trapped in your wet clothes. The dryer has to heat up the air and tumble the clothes continuously to evaporate that water slowly.
When you introduce a large, completely dry, and absorbent bath towel into that tumbling mix, the towel immediately starts soaking up the excess surface moisture from the wet clothes it bumps against. It acts like a giant sponge.
Instead of the dryer having to evaporate all that water using just hot air, the dry towel mechanically pulls the water away from the garments in those crucial first 15 minutes. By distributing the moisture more evenly across a larger surface area (the towel), the dryer's hot air can work much more efficiently to dry everything out.
Why Remove It After 15 Minutes?
You can technically leave the towel in for the entire cycle, and it will still help. However, removing it after 15 to 20 minutes is the pro-move.
By the 15-minute mark, the previously dry towel has usually absorbed as much moisture as it can and has become just as damp as the rest of the clothes. If you leave it in, your dryer now has to spend energy drying that thick towel along with your clothes. Pulling it out removes a significant chunk of water entirely from the machine, allowing your actual laundry to finish drying incredibly fast.
The Results
Ever since I started using the dry towel trick, my laundry routine has changed completely. Loads of heavy towels or thick jeans that used to take over an hour to dry now finish in 35 to 40 minutes.
It saves me a noticeable amount of time, it is gentler on my clothes because they are exposed to high heat for a shorter duration, and it shaves a little bit off my monthly electricity bill. Next time you are doing laundry and need that favorite shirt dried in a hurry, grab a dry towel. It is a genuine game-changer!
